Borderlands 4 launches on September 23

Gearbox Entertainment has revealed a new trailer for Borderlands 4 during State of Play, confirming the September 23 release. The looter shooter will be coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC.

A planned special event in the spring will explore the game’s game mechanics in detail. It will show off combat, exploration, Vault Hunters and action skills. The trailer hints at a massive arsenal of weapons and accessories, promising diversity in gameplay styles.

The action unfolds on the planet Kairos, where The Timekeeper battles an invading force. Players will be caught up in this conflict, exploring new worlds and new challenges. Borderlands 4 will include split-screen co-op and cross-play support. More details will be revealed in the coming months.

Last year, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford stated that Borderlands 4 would be the most open and free-to-play game in the franchise. In Borderlands 3, exploration was more compartmentalized, but the new title will enable more fluid navigation. Recently, producer Anthony Nicholson revealed that the game will include seamless transitions between areas and side activities. However, Gearbox didn’t design it as a traditional open world, eschewing classic exploration mechanics.

Borderlands 4 is introducing new modes of travel such as a hover bike and a grappling hook. The action takes place on the planet Kairos and its moon, offering a more earnest tone than Pandora. Gearbox emphasizes that the stakes are more realistic and the characters react accordingly, without losing the series’ distinctive style.
